We have an understanding with stones; they are ancient observers, historical repositories, their surface worn down by the elements over millenia. We set so much store by these ideas, sedimented in matter. We know where we stand next to a rock, or when holding a pebble.

 

A living stone really comes alive when it's sat next to a dead one.
